What is BP121?

BP121 is a defined probiotic strain of the species now named Ligilactobacillus salivarius. The Korean patent record identifies the strain deposit number as KCCM12170P, deposited with the Korean Culture Center of Microorganisms.

Is BP121 called Lactobacillus salivarius or Ligilactobacillus salivarius?

Both names refer to the same organism. The strain was published and patented as Lactobacillus salivarius BP121. In 2020, Zheng and colleagues split the genus Lactobacillus into 25 genera on whole-genome phylogeny, and Lactobacillus salivarius Rogosa et al. 1953 was reclassified as Ligilactobacillus salivarius (Rogosa et al. 1953) Zheng et al. 2020.

Because the 2020 BP121 study and the Korean patent predate or do not reflect the reclassification, literature searches must use both names. Neither name indicates a different strain, a reformulation, or a change in the underlying evidence.

How does BP121 work?

The proposed mechanism under investigation relates to the gut–kidney axis. Published preclinical work examined intestinal dysbiosis, intestinal-barrier markers, and the gut-derived uremic toxins indoxyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate in a rat model of cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury and in Caco-2 cells.

Is BP121 supported by research?

BP121 is supported by peer-reviewed preclinical research published in the International Journal of Molecular Medicine in 2020, and by a patent family granted in six jurisdictions. The study reported findings consistent with changes in uremic-toxin-related outcomes and intestinal-barrier and inflammatory measures within its experimental model.

Is BP121 protected by patents?

Yes. A single family, all assigned to GC Wellbeing Corp (주식회사 녹십자웰빙), is granted in six jurisdictions. Every member names Lactobacillus salivarius BP121 and deposit KCCM12170P.

The claimed properties across the family are indoxyl sulfate removal, p-cresol removal, and phosphorus absorption. These patents are assigned to GC Wellbeing Corp; their existence establishes that the strain is protected, not that any particular party holds rights under them.

Evidence boundary

The available BP121 evidence is preclinical. It does not establish clinical efficacy in humans, dogs, or cats, and it does not establish treatment, prevention, or cure of chronic kidney disease. Companion-animal applications are a research and development focus. Species-specific research, product-specific safety assessment, and appropriately designed veterinary studies are required before any efficacy statement.

Is BP121 the same as Renadyl?

No. BP121 is a single defined Ligilactobacillus salivarius strain developed by Tailored Bio. Renadyl® is a separate multi-strain probiotic and prebiotic dietary supplement marketed by Kibow Biotech, distributed in South Korea by Tailored Probio — a company distinct from Tailored Bio. Renadyl does not contain BP121.
